DIY Arctic Animal Peg Ornaments

Need a fun snow-day activity this winter?

I was recently hired to make these fun arctic animal peg doll ornaments for Parents Magazine's FamilyFun! The issue is on newsstands but instructions and printable templates for the outfits can be found here. I recommend using a hot glue gun (so grown-ups only for that part). Tacky glue will work but requires more patience.

Who knew krill and musk-ox were the new "it" animals?! Move over fox and owl!

Futurelandia Exhibit

Scout and Whistle took part in Futurelandia. An exhibition that was a part of Design Week Portland. Featured were posters that depicted a vision of Portland's future. Darren started a new series of prints based on vintage novelty postcards, and integrated that right into our submission for this show. Below is our work and some of our other favorites from the show, including pieces from Josh L. Anderson, Molly Mendoza, Alex Despain, OMFGCO, Bologne Sandwhich, and Harrison Freeman. You can buy the prints here.

Sasquatch Head Warmers A.K.A. Scout & Whistle Beanies

Our latest S&W product was created to warm the noggins of the Sasquatches of the world. See them at work in the photo series below. If you desire this unique kind of comfort, these beanies are now in the shop. The animal patches are made in Utah by one of the original Boy Scout designers, and the beanies/toques are made in our hometown of Portland,Oregon and just a few blocks away from Scout & Whistle. They're good enough for Squatches, and they're more than good enough for all of humankind. Check your head, (Beastie Boys!) and pop a beanie on that thing.

Wild Man: Photographs by Charles Fréger

Photographer Charles Fréger traveled through 19 European countries to capture a variety of Wilder Mann, or "Wild Men", in a spectrum of Pagan festivals. These Wild Men come in many forms but they are all rooted in celebrations of seasons, rites of passage and Fréger said many of the traditions are full of joy and, regardless of the country, had a lot in common.

“There was a slight touch of universality because a lot of the groups were doing something similar without knowing one another. Because many of the festivities were focused on animals and vegetation, you could photograph someone dressed like a bear for example in Portugal or Spain or Romania. To me this was really exciting and interesting.”

We can't help but think of Nick Cave's SoundSuits! You can see them in action below.

Behind The Scenes on Sesame Street - The Early Days

Here are some amazing shots taken on the set of Sesame Street in the 1970s. There are so many familiar faces we grew up with, muppets and humans alike! You can see even more - including shots from Fraggle Rock, Dark Crystal, The Muppet Show, Labyrnth and more Henson projects here at the Muppet Wiki!
